In recent years there's been a very popular pejorative usage on the internet to mean someone vigorously defending a cause, usually a liberal/progressive one, either falsely or obnoxiously.
A great choice, and I'll be keen on your interpretations. I've read much less of Rushie's fiction than his non-fiction (and actually, non-fiction about him).
Okay just googled it and it said : white knighting is someone who leaps in and defends another who is being attacked.... without thinking it through.... ^__^
