Take none of this personally because you aren’t. Whatever you’re hearing, whatever I say you’re thinking, it should all be taken with due skepticism as all evidence suggests you do not exist. You can't exist as I describe you, though you as a listener, or reader, or telepathic audience, ought to. Otherwise, how are these sentences operating?
You don’t care about that semantic babble. You care about the slime molds that have swallowed the first floor of our house.
You’re the second person to occupy this house, you know because the first person has dissolved into no more than a gangly skeleton inside the gelatinous mass presently overflowing the first floor. The bones of the first person’s right hand stretch out to the stairs as though begging for company.
You don’t feel like company; you’re almost alone here, except for the third person, myself, and I am just a voice. You never thought about it before, but you find disembodied voices annoying. Less annoying than carnivorous slime, but annoying nonetheless.
Even if you aren’t, you still would be a few things. Spry and resourceful, if I may flatter, are traits that describe you. You sprint up the staircase, pulling picture frames and shelves from the walls, and lobbing them down the steps at the slime. The slime absorbs all of these as easily as it did the first person, dissolving bits of organic matter like the butterfly collection you threw at it. It only stops at a broken salt shaker on the top stop, deliberately oozing around the white grains.
Thinking of slugs, you rush into the second floor pantry for a bag of salt. You don't wonder about why you have a pantry on the second floor, where almost no one keeps a pantry. You do wonder as the slime undulates and sloshes onto the second floor, growing upon receipt of the salt, and growing so rapidly that it catches your left leg.
You think two things then: that the slime burns like ice packing around your flesh, and that the slime was probably saving the broken salt shaker for dessert since it clearly loves the stuff. You curse Morton's and all salt distributors as you are sucked inside the slime mold, the first person's undigested cranium bumping against your chest. Your chest, like your legs and arms and eyes and pancreas, dissolves.
You find that none of this hurts. You find that you aren't scared. How is this possible?
Because you aren’t. The second person is a handy thing to be, and to not be.

Bathroom Monologue: Coldblooded Body Image Redux
“I try not to talk about it because it's unfashionable for
men to have body image issues. Society is acutely aware of how unrealistic
their demands are on women's appearances, but you never think how much pressure
you put on a man. I spend hours in aerobics classes, arms behind my back and
undulating on my belly. I've paid thousands for skin creams and mud treatments
without a single scale to show for it. There's a surgery to bifurcate your
tongue if you want to half-ass it. Truth is, science won't ever give you a
reptilian mouth. The funding isn't there. It isn’t profitable enough. Now
you're going to tell me I'm silly, that I'm too hard on myself, that nobody
expects me to become a snake. Ride the rails in my shoes for just one day. How
they stare at me while I’m trying to coil in my chair. They're all thinking,
"What a worthless cobra he makes." But none of them are willing to
help me become whole!”

Bathroom Monologue: "Why can't the computer just take the novel out of my brain instead of me having to write it?" –Anonymous Friend
Soon it will! With the march of progress, the innovations of neuroscience and tidy monthly fee, you too will never type again. You'll be jacked in to an industrial word processor, an air tube running up one nostril and a food tube down the other, fed a steady drip of chemicals to stimulate the parts of your brain that crank out ideas. You'll be held in an eternal sleep of pre-selected, pre-programmed dreams, free to enjoy them without the pesky freedom to recognize they're happening, all while your unconsciousness is milked of stories by the latest Microsoft Notepad, which will translate your imagination into immaculate blocks of text and tropes. You'll never have to worry about writing again. You won't be allowed to, either.

Bathroom Monologue: Virtues Bug, OR, It’s What’s Inside That Counts
As dusk whisked over their cave, Mummy Nine-Legs ascended to the ceiling and unfastened a few spools of humans for supper. Little Bug had never had his own human yet, being so young, and danced on all nine of his legs in anticipation. Yet when Mummy Nine-Legs handed him his bundle, and as he split it open, he dropped the fermented cadaver to the floor.
“Mummy, I want a good human,” he whined. “This one is
covered in warts and moles, and she’s got an overbite like she’s all teeth.”
“No one is all teeth,” said Mummy Nine-Legs, “It’s what’s on
the inside that counts.”
She took Little Bug’s prey and slit it down the belly for
the babe to see. And indeed, inside the cadaver was as lined with lipids as any
thin girl, and her liver was ripe and swollen. Her lungs popped in his mouth.
By the end of their meal, he even found he relished the way her teeth settled
in his gullet, and he realized how foolish he’d been. It really was what lay
inside people that counted, and particularly when they lay digesting inside
him.

My Foot Stopped Working
So on Thursday the 3rd I was in the hospital. I’m
going back this week for updates and more tests. It’s nothing serious; I just
can’t feel my foot, and if the condition spreads, I’ll never walk again.
We’re calling it “neuropathy” for now. It feels like nothing
serious because of how I’ve been jerked around. The podiatrist gave me
non-prescription drugs that did nothing and seemed annoyed that I wanted to know
why my toes had gone numb. My regular doctor was too busy to see me; his
physician’s assistant was willing, then too busy, and on our make-up, caught a
cold and left work early. It took me four tries to see anybody.
But man, fourth try is the charm! They drew a dizzying
amount of blood for three pages of tests. I’m fielding a new unit of
measurement for blood: “the Tarantino.” Sally extracted at least a Tarantino from
me to see if this is a blood disease, diabetes, hepatitis, MS, or, well, I hadn’t
heard of half these things. Eventually the joke became that maybe I was
pregnant (it doesn’t know where to grow in me, you see). I promised to name it
after Sally if I was.
So now I’m editing my next novel and waiting for a phone
call to find out if something is enormously wrong with me. Is this just my
foot, or will it spread? Will that symptom turn out to be the tip of an
iceberg? Hurry up and wait.
I’m going to blog about this going forward. I believe in
publicly exposing our most sensitive moments. While fiction is my favorite
means of self-expression, this is a gaping wound in my life. Every living
person walks around pretending they don’t have gaping wounds in their lives, and
so I’m going to show mine, in the hopes that more people don’t feel so
uncomfortable or driven to hiding theirs. Hiding what’s eating you is a
terrible idea, not only because you often avoid the kind of reflection and
feedback that might help, but because human history is littered with people who
hid that their fuses were burning until they blew. Whether it’s closeting your
depression, or shouldering cancer on your own, or a marriage that needs
scrutiny and only receives silence – there are too many ways we hurt ourselves.
I’ll happily embarrass myself to do a little good for somebody else.
If that makes no sense to you, we can talk about it.

Bathroom Monologue: Nine Pointers to My Younger Self About Love
1. Just be yourself. This is not because women will be attracted to who you actually are – it is that they will not be attracted to your fake selves either, and pretending will do long term mental damage to you. If you are just yourself, you will be slightly mentally healthier with no real variation in your chances at a relationship. Also, you could exercise more.
2. She has never “got it.” Go pick it up for her right now.
3. If you are waiting for her to ask, she is waiting for you to ask.
4. Never call her on her shit. Don’t expose the “got it” routine, or her waiting to be asked. Silently play along. You cannot win the fight that will ensue. There are only various flavors of losing.
5. Don’t worry so much about shared interests. Beyond the necessary few around which you’ll bond, she only has to be willing to give you the space you need to enjoy stuff alone. Meanwhile, you should engage in lots of her favorite passive activities, like holding yarn while she knits or watching Dr. Who. You will rapidly develop the life skill of being able to mentally tune out while sitting, enabling you to endure anything that pleases her. You’ll be able to sit outside a theatre during Winter for three hours for movie tickets and not really mind. Feel free to let her think you mind and she owes you, but do so in moderation.
6. You are expected to be single-minded. When she wants to fuck, this should be all you desire. When she wants to go to bed, you should be narcoleptic. When she wants to talk, you should be able to parse her tone to figure out subjects. She is the diverse unique butterfly. You are pollen. Harbor a complex internal life so that romance does not kill your soul, but recognize that at any given time she thinks all men are idiots and does not trust you with two motivations at the same time, nor does she like the idea of you having any other motivation than the one she wants you to have.
7. 1-6 are void if she feels like it.
8. Society scorns sexually inactive men. Single women are sad; single men are faggot assholes who are less than human. A female virgin is, at worst, annoying to the man who is failing to get into her panties. A male virgin can be pulling a bus load nuns out of a fire and people will still go, “Yeah, but...” If your experiences lead you to desire being single or celibate, then consider how much you like society. If your experiences lead you to feel society is full of people you’d rather never see again anyway, then feel free to abstain from romance. You can’t stay asleep in a bed with another person anyway.
9. 8 is void if she feels like it. You better have those tickets.
