The Strange Case of East Parish at Alienskin Magazine

My story, "The Strange Case of East Parish," is up over at Alienskin Magazine this month. They're a wonderful site that encourages new and emerging writers alongside giants like Orson Scott Card.

"The Strange Case of East Parish" by John Wiswell is the story of a peculiar zombie. Locked in a confessional at the outbreak, he was isolated from all the others. What is a zombie like if its never known the herd? And what would you do with him? This story is one case study.

Because Alienskin Magazine doesn't have a Comments section, any comments and feedback are welcome on this post.

You can read the story here: http://www.alienskinmag.com/flash12.htm

  1. What a unique story. I especially liked the last 2 paragraphs. I was sort of reminded of the end of "Shaun of the Dead" where he keeps his pal chained up in the shed.

  2. Kind of a perfect one to receive a confession...and he doesn't eat or sleep. Fun story!

  3. Really enjoyed this. Having gone to Catholic School and been made to confess "sins" when I thought I had been perfectly wonderful, I used to make up a few white lies.

Hmm. Guess I was a sinner after all.

  5. Really enjoyed your story. Post-apocalyptic and zombie stuff is always an interesting read, and I really liked your take on it. Nice work!

  6. Writers like to talk layers but you did use them well. The humor underneath the humor in this one is brilliant.

  7. My biggest thought after finishing the story is... "why?"

Why was the Reverend different? Is there some sort of religious aspect or is it the simple fact that he was locked up and physically can't reach or get to people?

  8. Thank you all for the kind words! I'm glad some humorous apocalyptica can work.

As far as why, I know I didn't leave clues (at least not explicit ones), but I simply can't bring myself to spoil why. I hope that doesn't ruin the story for readers like Scott.

  10. Given that Alienskin has folded, I'll be sure to re-post this story so everyone can read it. You can expect it some time in 2011.
